Over the last ten years, the media landscape has changed dramatically. Social media apps and filmmaking tools have become a fundamental part of our digital lives. Young people learn, socialize, explore their identities and engage with the world using their screens. Media literacy is now a basic literacy. In response to these developments, Film Crew Club offers hands-on classes in which we work with cameras, iPads and smartphones to explore animation and live action filmmaking. Students get a chance to act, direct, script, film, animate (2D&3D), edit (iMovie), and create special effects in a wide range of media formats. Our media teams edit the material created in class and screen the final films each week to students. This creates a dynamic feedback loop that empowers learning. By making media together, students learn, first hand, how to look at it critically and how to engage with it safely and respectfully. Classes include playful exercises and games in which students learn to spot fake images, assess online content for risk, learn how editing and AI tools manipulate imagery and differentiate between authentic and sponsored content. All equipment is provided by us. Parents are sent links to online portfolios so they can view, read about and download the films made in class. Our policy is to fast-track beginners in the basics and to challenge more experienced students with new and exciting media projects.
